3i3s Africa

Africa connected to the Space solutions of tomorrow

3i3s-Africa harnesses space expertise to address the energy, environmental and societal needs of the African continent — placing Africa at the heart of tomorrow’s solutions. As the African branch of the international 3i3s network (International Independent Institute for Aerospace & Satellite Solutions), alongside 3i3s-Europa and 3i3s-America, we connect space experts with non-space actors to co-create lasting value.

Our mission

Think, Explore and Innovate - Together

The space sector must open up to address humanity’s greatest challenges. Africa is not a recipient of space technology — it is a co-designer of the global space economy. 3i3s-Africa bridges space expertise with the continent’s real-world needs: energy access, environmental protection, healthcare, and education

Listen & Connect

We build bridges between space experts and potential users — institutions, companies, governments and communities — translating space technologies into concrete solutions for Africa's most pressing challenges.

Innovate & Incubate

We identify and nurture emerging ideas: research programmes, energy sovereignty projects, training initiatives and public-private partnerships. Our approach: understand, innovate, and scale.

Co-build & Influence

Through regional conferences, think-tanks, and expert panels, we shape ecosystems that influence markets and public policy — ensuring Africa becomes a co-designer, not a late adopter, of the global space economy.

Our Commitments

Awareness and Outreach

Conferences, meetings, and awareness days designed to introduce the careers and challenges of the space sector to the widest possible audience, particularly young people and groups still underrepresented in these fields, in order to spark interest and vocations even before entering a formal study path.

STEM Training and Scholarships

Dedicated scholarship programs for scientific and technical fields related to space (satellite engineering, RF systems, robotics); partnerships with African and European universities to open pathways of excellence accessible right from undergraduate studies.

Regional R&D Centers

Support for the emergence of applied research hubs in several pilot countries (Morocco, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa), designed as local relays capable of translating the continent’s needs into concrete research projects, rather than depending exclusively on external centers.

Startup Incubation

Support for young African companies positioned on space technologies and their spin-off applications (antennas, energy systems, aerospace manufacturing), from the idea stage to initial funding, drawing on 3I3S’s industrial and institutional network.

Energy diversification and sovereignty
Immediate priorities (grids, onshore renewables, green hydrogen) and gradual preparation for breakthrough technologies on a 2040+ horizon.

Inclusive governance and regulation
African participation in international space regulatory bodies; safety standards, debris mitigation, frequency allocation, and cross-border energy and data law.

Diaspora network and institutional gateways
Mobilization of the scientific and entrepreneurial diaspora; gateways with partner institutions (AsAf, ESA, NASA, CNES, GIFAS).

Projects & Events

From energy sovereignty to environmental monitoring, here are some of the key initiatives 3i3s-Africa has driven or contributed to.

Space Solar Power for Africa
International Conference on Energy from Space — 2025

Manassé Bokole, President of 3i3s-Africa, delivered a keynote on the socioeconomics of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) for Africa. Key message: Africa must stop being seen as a technology recipient and start being recognized as a co-designer of the global space-energy landscape. With 600 million Africans still without electricity and energy demand set to multiply sixfold by 2050, SBSP represents Africa's long-term stability layer.

Upcoming News

International Space Summit in Paris

The international space summit, to be held in Paris on September 9 and 10, 2026, will be an opportunity to open a dialogue for all, serving a space sector up to the challenges of our time. It will bring together numerous participants, including heads of state and government from around the world, representatives of international and regional organizations, parliamentarians, scientists, military personnel, astronauts, and decision-makers from the private sector, civil society, local authorities, and development banks.

NASA Space Challenge, Bukavu, 2026

The NASA Space Apps Challenge Bukavu 2026 is an initiative that aims to bring together young people, students, researchers, developers, and innovation stakeholders around space and scientific data to develop concrete solutions to local challenges. The ambition is to make this event much more than a two-day hackathon: a starting point to sustainably strengthen the local ecosystem of innovation, data, and technology by creating bridges between young people, universities, communities, and various regional actors. Within this dynamic, we notably wish to explore a collaboration with 3i3s-Africa regarding the technical, scientific, and geospatial aspects of the project, as well as the mobilization of African innovation networks. The objective would be to help provide participants with better access to expertise, data, and collaboration opportunities, while boosting the initiative’s visibility beyond Bukavu. The impact we want to highlight is empowering local talents to transform their region’s challenges into innovative and sustainable solutions, and creating a momentum around Space Apps that can endure long after the event.
